Position Summary
The Planning Project Manager leads and engages in advanced planning activities emphasizing client and team interaction, project management expertise, and execution. They support the Principal over Urban Planning in managing planning projects, fostering inclusivity, guiding interactions, consensus-building, and effective communication with team members, clients, and communities. Delegating project responsibilities to team members and providing guidance on task performance is also part of their role. The ideal candidate embraces mentorship, has 8+ years of community planning experience, and an AICP certification.
The Planning Project Manager oversees planning projects and collaborates closely with landscape designers, architects, and other experts to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations. They coordinate internal workflow of projects with public or private clients, lead interactions with the public, perform public outreach, lead public adoption processes, and design exercises, and collect feedback to provide and present solutions to our clients in meaningful and impactful ways. This includes attending evening and weekend meetings to participate in public outreach and plan adoption. As well as performing and managing research and analysis including identifying issues and strategies to mitigate issues and strengthen communities.
The Planning Project Manager writes and presents formal and technical reports, planning documents, and correspondence and may include the opportunity to write white paper publications. Other key tasks include assisting on marketing proposal preparation, overseeing specialized planning functions such as large-scale new development proposals and environmental studies. Advising the Principal of Urban Planning on planning-related matters and helping to ensure appropriate training and mentorship opportunities for Planning team members. This role will be a part of conversations with the Principal over Planning in budget preparation, and monitors and controls expenditures throughout project execution. Here is a list of the key skills which we seek for this role:
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator, MS Office, SketchUp, Lumion, and GIS Analysis
- Strong verbal and written communication.
- Ability to present information in a clear and concise manner.
- Innovative, detail-oriented, experienced in highly visible/controversial projects.
- Project Management: Ability to provide effective supervision and team management, capable of managing multiple, high-priority assignments.
- Strong interpersonal skills to develop good working relationships with team members, officials, and stakeholders and to resolve complaints.
- Strong understanding of city and regional planning with experience in building consensus across diverse stakeholder groups.
- Thorough knowledge of urban planning and development and local government policies and procedures.
- Strong understanding of methods and techniques of effective technical report preparation and presentation.
- Well-versed in pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations including recent changes.
- Experienced in budgeting procedures and techniques.
- Knowledge of local government procedures and practices, recent developments, current literature, and sources of information related to municipal planning and administration.
- Strong analytical skills to interpret research data for reports and apply mathematic techniques in practical situations.
- Working knowledge and coordination of specialty consulting areas such as land use planning/zoning, transportation planning, environmental planning, urban design, housing, historic preservation, or economic development.
This position is a salaried overtime exempt position. Qualified candidates may inquire about pay range, with higher pay aligned with greater experience and qualifications as outlined in this posting.
