Gas taxes are in the news a lot lately, from reports on increases in five states to announcements of states launching pay-per-mile pilot programs, including Michigan and California. Despite public officials and consumers alike bemoaning the high cost at the pump, it’s an unfortunate truth that many states’ gas tax revenue is not keeping up with their transportation funding needs. If you’ve wondered recently which states have the highest gas tax in the United States, look no further.

According to The Ascent, a Motley Fool service, here are the top 10:

  1. Pennsylvania: $0.576 per gallon
  2. California: $0.511 per gallon
  3. Washington: $0.494 per gallon
  4. New Jersey: $0.423 per gallon
  5. Illinois: $0.392 per gallon
  6. Ohio: $0.385 per gallon
  7. North Carolina: $0.385 per gallon
  8. Oregon: $0.380 per gallon
  9. West Virginia: $0.372 per gallon
  10. Utah: $0.345 per gallon
